The non-profit world traditionally doesn’t look into investments like solar panels because it’s looked at as a front-end cost, but realistically, this is a long-term investment that is going to save us a lot of money.

After a five to six-year return, it will save us $25,000 or more on an annual basis, and that is a lot of money for a non-profit.

My Possibilities is a Plano-based non-profit that serves as a pioneering leader in vocational education and job placement for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) throughout North Texas. MP is changing the landscape for adults with IDD.

Host Comments

This system was installed as part of a grant from the Sun Club Foundation, an initiative of Green Mountain Energy. The grant also helped us launch a horticulture program that includes hydroponic sheds supporting a new horticulture elective for HIPsters, or Hugely Important People, that MP serves.

Our organization has always been a very green focused - we’ve always tried to figure out what other things we could do to be environmentally friendly. I think the non-profit world traditionally doesn’t look into investments like solar panels because it’s looked at as a front-end cost, but realistically, this is a long-term investment that is going to save us a lot of money. After a five to six-year return, it will save us $25,000 or more on an annual basis, and that is a lot of money for a non-profit.

Original estimates were that the system would offset 45% of our electricity needs, and from the start, we’ve met and exceeded that target.
